Welcome to the skull-cracking, blood-splattering, mayhem-loving comic brave enough to ask: How can a man sworn to do good do so much violence? Hah! F***ing with you. It’s just…BARBARIC.
PLOT AND STORY
Owen the Barbarian has been cursed to do good with what remains of his life. His bloodthirsty weapon, Axe, has become his moral compass with a drinking problem. Together they wander the realm, foredoomed to help any who seek assistance. But there is one thing Owen hates more than a life with rules: Witches.
This comic jumps straight out of the gates and charges full speed to the final page and it’s absolutely brilliant. Michael Moreci is a writer who stood out for me on his series Wasted Space so when I first got the news about this comic I was already sold. I was very fortunate to get an extra early look at the comic (thank you Vault comics) and I was blown away and have been desperate to talk about it with people. Big time action, interesting characters with a dry humour makes Barbaric a comic which will become very popular.
The best thing about this story are the levels of humour throughout. It’s not just the dark and dry one liners but it’s the sharp sarcasm which comes mainly from Axe. Did I mention Owen carries a blood thirsty axe? Absolutely genius!
All I want to do in this section of my review is input a video of me clapping my hands because I don’t think I will find the right words to truly congratulate Nathan Gooden and Addison Duke on creating such an amazing looking comic.
Owen is a character that draws comparisons to characters like Conan while living in a world that resembles universes like Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings. Then there is Axe. Did I mention Owen carries a blood thirsty axe? It’s an axe with a head on the blade with big gnarly teeth and a thirst for blood and is probably the most original comic book character I have ever met.
To describe this comic I would say Gladiator meets Witcher meets Venom on a Game of Thrones scale. The story is layered and very intriguing while the main character has a troubled soul while surrounded in mystery and he has a talking, blood drunk axe who is hilarious. I urge people not to sleep on this comic, If you like action, fantasy and graphic comics then you will like this.
I read this via an advance preview copy issued by Vault comics and received no incentive to review this comic. All images and artwork are courtesy of Vault comics and their respective owners.
