Things just keep getting deeper and deeper as Paul, Jolene and Lucas expand their search for Pam.

PLOT AND STORY

Arriving at a mysterious underwater base we learn that the infection that has ravaged the world may have been around much longer than we thought. The world went into chaos as the millennium rang in but what if Y2K wasn’t actually the cause we once believed.

Issue #4 has taken a huge diversion in a completely different direction I didn’t see coming. MIRKA ANDOLFO and DAVID GOY have cleverly built a story over the last few months making us hold out hope that Jolene would be reunited with her missing sister Pamela. While we still hold on for this it’s not just the infection we are worried about now or if Pamela will survive it. Now we need to be concerned about the whole group, where they will end up and what dangers lie in wait.

ARTWORK

Deep Beyond once again reminds me how this is one of the sharpest looking books on the shelves today. The characters, the colour, the interesting settings and the sci-fi underwater battles creates some stunning pages. Artist ANDREA BROCCARDO is firing on all cylinders with this series and the colours from BARBARA NOSENZO compliments it perfectly.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Deep Beyond is a series I probably would not have been reading had I not been given press copies so I am eternally grateful to Image Comics for that because this series continues to surprise and impress me every month. A shift in direction this issue is setting things up nicely for what’s to come.

I read this via an advance preview copy issued by Image comics and received no incentive to review this comic. All images and artwork are courtesy of Image comics and their respective owners.
