Remember the three golden rules 1. You must never leave the trench 2. The trench provides and 3. The trench is endless.
PLOT AND STORY
In Snow Angels, Milliken and Mae have never left The Trench—it’s all they’ve ever known. They were born in The Trench, and they’ll die there, just like all their people do. The two girls, eight and eleven, are a part of The Trenchfolk, a sprawling settlement of people living inside the massive ice walls of a vast, seemingly endless frozen trench carved into the surface of an otherwise icy wasteland.
Based on a story previously written by Jeff Lemire Snow Angels brings this desolate story to life. As far as opening issues go you can’t ask for much more as we meet the main characters and learn about their lives. I like how we learn just enough about the trench without giving too much away which adds more mystery to the story. I am left wondering what is the trench? Where is the trench? And why are the rules so important?
I will openly admit Jock is my favourite comic book artist of all time but I don’t want my biased opinion to detract from the amazing job he has done on this book. I have to compliment Jock on the way he makes an empty and snowy environment not look sparse or plain. The use of white, blue and grey create a dazzling environment that looks beautiful yet devoid of life at the same time.
On a couple of pages there is blood and the way the red is so prominent reminds me the way Frank Miller would use red to stand out in his Sin City books.
The creative pairing of Jeff Lemire and Jock sold me on this book the second I heard about it and so far I’m pleased to say they didn’t disappoint. Snow Angels has created a new and unique story set in a desolate yet beautifully illustrated environment.
I read this via Prime Reading and received no incentive to review this comic.
